Practical Nursing

About

This Practical Nursing Program is designed to provide training in the competencies required of a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).  All instructional units must be successfully completed for progression in the course.  The course is 1296 hours and is 12 months in length with a diploma awarded after successful completion. Careful consideration is given to the standards set by the Tennessee State Board of Nursing* in the development and upgrading of this program.

This program is designed to meet the needs of nurses employed in hospitals, nursing homes, home healthcare, etc. 

Practical Nursing Applications are available here or in Student Services.  Applications will NOT be accepted until successful completion of entrance exam.  The Hesi Exam is the exam currently being given.  If applicant passed the Compass Exam those scores are valid up to two years from test date.  

Classes are held at the Fall and Summer Applicants attend TCAT – Livingston, and Spring Applicants attend the TCAT – Livingston Extension Campus at the Cookeville Higher Education Campus (CHEC). Clinical sites designed to meet program requirements. Preparation for licensure by the State Board of Nursing begins with the student’s application process and continues throughout the year-long program.

Students interested in enrolling in the Practical Nursing program must completed a Practical Nursing Application and visit the receptionist to schedule the Hesi entrance exam.  This is a new extrance exam selected by the state.  The exam cost is $40 (cash, credit or debit card accepted) and tentative schedule is below. Applicants that have previously taken the Compass Exam may use those scores up to two years from the test date.  Suggested practice tests can be found at Testpreview.com.  Study books will be available at a later date.

Expected testing dates are below.

Test starts at 8 AM. Pleae arrive 15 minutes prior to test time.

TEST DATES FOR THE HESI ARE: November 3, November 17, and December 8.

For entrance into the Pracitcal Nursing program, a student must have a high school or GED/HiSET diploma. Students in the program are subject to drug testing and background screening.

Care for ill, injured, or convalescing patients or persons with disabilities in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, private homes, group homes, and similar institutions. May work under the supervision of a registered nurse. Licensing required.
